Risks of FGM
FGM
may present severe complications for girls and women who have undergone it.
Complications differ according to the type of FGM performed, the medical
training by the circumciser and utensils used for the purpose of the
operation.
Short term complications may include pain, bleeding, emotional distress, anaemia(lack of iron in the blood), urinary retention, infections.FGM is also associated with an increase of risk in developing HIV/AIDS and other infectious disease (Hepatitis B, C). Because the circumsiser uses the same blade to cut for other women, the infection is able to travel through blood.
Long term complication may consist of mental and emotional health issues, painful period and urination, cysts , bladder infections and cysts. FGM ( in particular type III) also causes the need for later surgeries: the reopening of the vagina is necessary to have sexual intercourse and give birth.
A multi-country study by WHO (2006) in six African countries, showed that women who had undergone FGM, had significantly increased risks for adverse events during childbirth, and that genital mutilation in mothers has negative effects on their newborn babies. According to the study, an additional one to two babies per 100 deliveries die as a result of FGM.
